Disclaimer: Nothing will ever replace the power of nature. True grounding happens when your bare feet touch the Earth, when you feel the soil, the sand, the grass, or the sea. That is the real medicine. But for those who live through long and freezing winters, direct grounding isn’t always possible. The Earth is covered in ice, the days are short, and the body starts to feel disconnected. This is when a strategy becomes essential. If you want to keep your frequency high, to stay balanced while managing work, family, and your own healing, you need ways to bring the energy of the Earth indoors.
I was born and raised in Malta, surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. The warmth of the sun and the sea salt were part of me. Growing up in that environment I never realized how much my body depended on it. Then I moved to Pennsylvania and winter became my greatest challenge. Twenty five years of gray skies and icy winds cut me off from the warmth I once knew. When I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, the cold became almost unbearable.
In 2023 I became an empty nester and gave myself permission to start living the life I had dreamed about. I began traveling, following the sun, choosing warmth all year round. That choice supported my healing and reminded me of something I now share with every client. Staying grounded is not a luxury. It is the foundation of health, energy, and balance.
Most of my clients are still in Pennsylvania, and every year they ask me the same question. How do I stay grounded when everything outside is frozen? Here are twelve practices that will help you keep your energy steady through the darkest months of winter.
1. Grounding sheets and mats 🛏️
Groundology makes sheets and mats that connect your body to the Earth’s current while you sleep or work. They are simple, effortless, and one of the most effective tools for people who cannot get outdoors.

2. Grounding straps for shoes 👟
Groundology also makes straps that attach to your shoes, turning them into grounding footwear. You can walk outside in sneakers or boots and still connect to the Earth without ever taking off your shoes.

3. Salt baths 🛁
Soaking in warm water filled with Epsom salt or magnesium flakes relaxes the muscles, supports detox, and calms the nervous system. It is one of the simplest ways to mimic the healing charge of oceans and hot springs.
4. Barefoot breaks indoors 🦶
Create a grounding zone inside your home. Use a shallow box filled with sand, a tray of smooth river stones, or a planter with soil. Stand barefoot for a few minutes each day. The textures remind your nervous system that you are safe and connected. Add visualization, imagine roots extending from your feet into the Earth, and you will feel the effect even more deeply.
5. Plants 🌱
Plants are living reminders of the Earth. Caring for them, touching their soil, or simply sitting near their presence is grounding in itself. Science shows that even being in a room filled with plants can lower stress and improve mood.
6. Water fountain 💧
The sound of moving water soothes the mind and body. Indoor fountains create negative ions, which naturally uplift mood and clear stagnant energy. Listening to water flow is like bringing the calm of rivers and oceans into your home.

7. Morning sunlight ☀️
Step outside for a few minutes each morning, even if the sky is gray. Natural light tells your brain to balance hormones, anchor your circadian rhythm, and boost mood. For thyroid and immune health this simple habit makes a big difference.
8. Warm Earth foods 🥕
Soups made with root vegetables like carrots, beets, or potatoes carry the grounding energy of the Earth. Add warming spices such as ginger, turmeric, or cinnamon and you nourish both body and spirit.
9. Infrared sauna 🔥
An infrared sauna feels like sunlight wrapped around your body. It improves circulation, lowers inflammation, and melts away stress. Place your feet on a grounding mat while inside and you combine two powerful practices in one.

10. Fireplace and candlelight 🕯️
Fire connects us back to something primal. Sitting by a fireplace or lighting candles in the evening resets the nervous system and creates peace. Beeswax candles are especially powerful because they also purify the air.
11. Himalayan salt lamps 🧡
A salt lamp creates a soft amber glow that warms the atmosphere of any room. It brings comfort, helps the body relax, and supports deeper grounding at night.

12. Barefoot on cement floors 🏚️
Cement in direct contact with the Earth can ground you. Basements, garages, or patios often work as long as the surface is raw and unsealed. It is a simple way to reconnect without stepping outside.
Final note
Winter does not have to separate you from the Earth. While nothing can replace the medicine of standing barefoot on warm soil, there are ways to stay grounded when the world outside is frozen. These practices kept me steady through my years in Pennsylvania and continue to help my clients today.
Grounding supported my healing from Hashimoto’s and reminded me that connection to the Earth is not optional, it is essential. If you are ready to begin, start with something simple. A Groundology sheet, mat, or shoe strap brings the Earth back into your home and makes grounding possible no matter how deep the snow may be.
